Now, Shivpal's wife and son set to head cooperative bodies

The path is being cleared for the election of members of Mulayam Singh Yadav's clan as heads of two premier cooperative institutions of the state next week, it is learnt.

Cooperative Minister Shivpal Yadav's wife Sarla Yadav is likely to become chairperson of the UP Co-operative Bank (UPCB), which has an annual turnover of Rs 8,000 crore, while his son Ankur Yadav is likely to become chairman of the Uttar Pradesh Pradeshik Cooperative Federation (PCF), which has an annual turnover of more than Rs 4,000 crore, sources said.

Already, Shivpal, besides being Cooperative Minister, is also chairman of the UP Sahkari Gram Vikas Bank, commonly known as the Land Development Bank.

Sarla has been elected a delegate in the District Cooperative Bank of Etawah, which makes her eligible to contest the election of UPCB directors, scheduled for February 13. The directors, in turn, will elect one of them as chairperson on February 14.

On Wednesday, Ankur (26) filed his nomination papers for the post of director in PCF, for which the election will be held on February 12.

"The election of chairman will also be held on February 12. The result will be declared the same day. We have received nominations for the posts of director which will be scrutinised tomorrow," said Ravindra Singh, General Manager and Election Officer of PCF.

Both PCF and UPCB are cooperative institutions, but both are controlled by the government. As a result, the directors and chairmen are invariably members of the ruling party. When Mayawati was chief minister, BSP leaders were chairmen of both institutions. Now the victory of SP members in the elections is a foregone conclusion.

Interestingly, the PCF board has 14 elected directors but only 13 candidates, all known SP men, have filed nominations; there is no candidate for the one post reserved for Scheduled Castes.
