The huge row sparked by the attack on tehsildar Major (Retd) G S Benipal seems to be taking another turn with a few revenue officials resuming their duties on Friday morning and certain factions choosing to continue with the strike. While a few employees have given up the demand for suspension of the Deputy Commissioner and the Senior Superintendent of Police, the other group insists to carry on with the protest.

On the other hand,Revenue Minister Ajit Singh Kohar did not rule out rampant corruption in the department due to

which consumers were being harassed at every step, even for routine work.

Kohar said functioning of the department, especially the Ludhiana office, would be under close vigil from now on. “I will be visiting the Ludhiana office in around 10 days to get a hold of things. If employees harass consumers, they should be ready to face action,” he said.

The minister admitted that one has to grease palms even to trace an old record and this nexus was spoiling the image of the department. Sadly, even consumers prefer bribing their way out rather than having to wait for routine works,he said.

The arrest of tehsildar Arvind Verma, who was caught red-handed accepting bribe by the Vigilance Bureau last September, too, opened a can of worms as he confessed to be giving a share of the bribe to senior officials.

Kohar, however, expressed ignorance on the case and said that they would be taking steps to control corruption in the department.

Offices, meanwhile, re-opened in the morning and employees were seen clearing the backlog. The attendance, however, was not 100 per cent due to reported infighting between the union members. Universal Human Rights Commissioner and Punjab Developers’ Association were among the many organisations that had requested the revenue officials to resume work.

Students bear the brunt

Several students seeking admission in colleges have been running from pillar to post to get their domicile certificates attested,Saturday being the last date for submitting the forms. The infighting and ego clashes between revenue officials is causing great inconvenience to the residents.
