Delhi schools will now study the history of swine flu and how the strain mutates. Power point presentations on the pandemic prepared by officials from the Health department will be making their way into schools.

Schools have been doing their bit to contain the spread of the H1N1 virus by shutting down sections of classes and issuing circulars ; this initiative will help create awareness. “The presentations have information on the history of swine flu,its symptoms, and how the strain mutates,” a Heath department official looking after the swine flu cases in Delhi said.

The information has been made public on the Union Ministry of Health’s website.

The CDs are available on demand. In the wake of an increasing number of swine flu cases in schools — 35 confirmed cases have been reported — many schools in the city have demanded more information about the pandemic. “We will help and facilitate them through the CDs,” the official said.

The presentation was first given at St Columba’s School and Springdales School,Pusa Road.

“Officials from the government visited our school and we held a screening of the power point presentation for our teachers and members of the managing board,” Amita Wattal, the principal of Springdales School, said.

Br L D Lobo, the Principal of St Columba’s School — where the presentation was made three days ago — has asked the principals of other schools to publicise the CD. In a general body meeting of the National Progressive Schools Conference,Br Lobo asked the principals present to get the CD.

Five more test postive
Two schoolchildren and three adults tested positive for the H1N1 virus on Wednesday, taking the total to 155 patients so far. The Health Ministry issued guidelines on Wednesday, advising schools and colleges to not shut down because of the pandemic. This follows speculation over the need for closing schools to control the outbreak. The ministry has also directed school authorities to grant seven-10 days of leave to those showing symptoms of swine flu, without demanding a medical certificate. — ENS
