After L K Advani,Narendra Modi,Murli Manohar Joshi and Nitin Gadkari,RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat held a 90-minute closed-door meeting with Varun Gandhi Friday.

Sources said the meeting was part of an RSS plan to promote young BJP faces that represent Hindutva as well as development. Days before she was chosen by BJP to establish a connect with first-time voters,Poonam, daughter of the late Pramod Mahajan, had met the RSS chief.

Varun (32) and Poonam (30) are the youngest faces in BJP and sources said Bhagwat thinks they have “potential as future leaders”.

“The choice of Varun is due to his strong Hindutva credentials. When he was in jail,Bhagwat, then sarkaryawah, helped him a lot. Poonam is being seen as a parivar child loyal to Bhagwat,” the sources said.

Varun, who has been given the charge of West Bengal and has to organise 100 rallies in the country with Ananth Kumar, was reportedly advised by Bhagwat not to court controversies and fall in traps of other parties.

RSS watcher and analyst Dilip Deodhar said: “From the series of meetings Bhagwat is having with BJP leaders,it appears like return of the (Balasaheb) Deoras era when RSS took active interest in party affairs.

“Deoras discarded the legacy of Golwalkar Guruji by dabbling in politics. Bhagwat appears to be following him.”
