NRI booked for demanding dowry, harassing wife

Police have booked a non-resident Indian (NRI), who is the nephew of a former Haryana Director General of Police (DGP), and his family members for allegedly demanding dowry from his wife and subsequently subjecting her to harassment.

Kanwar Samir, who originally hails from Balachaur, Punjab, and has been living in the UK for the past few years. Police said the case had been registered against Samir and his family members at the Sector-5 police station. The other persons who have been booked include his parents, sister and brother-in-law. Deepak Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Sector-5 police station, said a case had been registered and they were investigating the matter.

According to sources, Samir has set up an oil company in the UK, and got married to the victim, who hails from Sector 4, Panchkula, two years back.

The woman's father has alleged in the complaint that Samir's parents had harassed them earlier seeking dowry, and at the time of marriage they managed to give the girl jewellery and cash amounting to nearly Rs 3 crore.

It was also alleged in the complaint that after marriage, Samir had been harassing the girl, and after she visited the UK, she noticed that he was in an extra-marital affair.

Sources said that one day, the victim found a girl in Samir's car, and when she objected to it, he said that she needn't meddle in his life. Subsequently, when she continued to protest against his behaviour, Samir allegedly subjected her to harassment, and forced her to buy him liquor.

The girl also stated that after she relocated to the UK, she found a job in a store, and subsequently started working with a company there. Despite separating, Samir has not yet allegedly returned her jewellery and other household goods.

Sources added that on the pretext of taking her to India on a trip, he left her here and returned to the UK alone. He reportedly took her passport and visa with him. They added that Samir had withdrawn the sponsorship of the victim with the UK government, due to which she can't visit him.

The woman's father has also alleged in the complaint before the police that the victim's sister-in-law and her husband were involved in drug peddling in Rajasthan.
