NRI dowry case: Father-in-law rebuts allegations

The father, Inderjit Singh of a non-resident Indian (NRI), Kanwar Samir, accused of harassing his daughter-in-law for dowry, along with his family members, on Wednesday rebutted the allegations. Samir is the nephew of a former Haryana director general of police (DGP).

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Singh said that no dowry threat was issued to the girl.

Singh added that instead, the conduct of the girl was not good when she was living in the UK with her husband. He said the girl was not doing any work at home and used to go to pubs, due to which her husband had raised an objection. Kanwar Samir, hails from Balachaur, Punjab, and has been living in the UK for the past few years. The case had been registered at the Sector 5 police station against Samir and his other family members, including his parents, sister and brother-in-law.

Samir has set up an oil company in the UK, and got married to the girl, who hails from Sector 4, Panchkula, two years ago. The woman's father has alleged in a complaint that Samir's parents had harassed them earlier seeking dowry, and at the time of marriage they managed to give the girl jewellery and cash amounting to nearly Rs 3 crore.

Singh said that he and his wife were called by police and questioned in connection with the dowry case.
