An NRI from Greece who had ditched his wife to remarry a Batala girl, was booked along with 13 others on the complaint of his first wife and her relatives. The groom and two of his kin were arrested, but reportedly let off later.
Rajwinder Kaur, the first wife, said her husband Palwinder Singh had been living in Greece for more than seven years. She also charged her in-laws with harassing her for dowry.
The second marriage took place at a gurdwara on Sultanwind Road on March 21. Palwinder had reportedly informed
Rajwinder of this wedding on telephone from Greece. Rajwinder had got married almost nine months ago. The couple stayed together for two months, after which Palwinder went back to Greece.
Rajwinder said it was not a happy marriage since the beginning, and Palwinder used to fight with her frequently. “He refused to return the dowry items and also threatened that he would marry another girl,” she said.
Rajwinder told the police that when he went back to Greece, Palwinder rang her up to say that he intended to marry a girl from Bhullar village.
“He returned to India on March 20 and got married the next day,” she stated. Sources add that Rajwinder’s father Jagir Singh informed the police, who reached the spot.
SHO Ghuman police station Gurvinder Singh Aulakh denied that police had released Palwinder Singh after arresting him.
“The accused was not arrested, as he and his bride had left the gurdwara soon after the wedding ceremony,” he said. He added that search was on for Palwinder , who was likely to be arrested soon.
