High price of land at Rajarhat has forced the state Government to look for land at Madhyamgram, about 5 km from Dum Dum airport, for setting up an NSG hub there.

Another team of the NSG arrived in the city on Wednesday. It would visit Barrackpore where it would be shown a tract of 10,000 acres of land for the bigger NSG unit, to be built on the lines of Manesar in Haryana.

The NSG is going to set up two units in the state: one, requiring a plot of about 12,000 acres, will be for training, and the other will be a small one, to be set up on 25-30 acres of land, where NSG commandos will be stationed and, in case of any emergency, they will be flown to any part of the eastern and north-eastern India.

The NSG wants the small unit near the airport, and Rajarhat is ideally situated as it is just 1 km from the airport. "But land at Rajarhat comes at a premium. So we have moved to Madhyamgram and are looking for land there. We will take them to Barrackpore. If we could have identified the land at Madhyamgram, we would have shown it to them tomorrow itself," a senior official of the Home Department told The Indian Express.

On January 19 and 20, a two-member NSG team visited Panagarh in Burdwan district and Kalaikunda in West Midnapore district where they were shown land for the bigger unit.

"We want the NSG to start its work as soon as possible," said Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen.

NSG hub in Bengal faces land troubleBy: Suresh Rao | 22-Feb-2009 Reply | Forward No chance or reason should stand in the way of the NSG facility being built where it is most suitable. If Rajarhat is most suitable then itmust be buiklt at Rajarhat only There cannot be any compromise on thatscore. Let the opponents to the Rajarhat idea be told this very clearly. Too many conditions and court cases are coming in the way of our defence preparedness which should be curbed and dealt with ruthlessly Onlty then can we hope of any semblence ofan adequate response to terror
