National Students Union of India (NSUI) maintained lead over its rival Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in students senate elections of the Gujarat University (GU) by winning five out of eight seats for which the elections were held and results declared on Sunday.
ABVP had to remain content with only four seats from undergraduate (UG) commerce, UG Arts, post-graduate (PG) Arts and medical faculties.
State NSUI president Gulabsinh Rajput said nominations of both - NSUI and ABVP - from medical faculty were rejected by the university's election officer for some errors in their nomination forms.
Rajput said Kunal Patel, of BJ Medical College, was an Independent and won without contest. However, Kunal could not be contacted.
There are a total of 10 seats in the senate for students. Elections for another seat was not held because all the nominations for that seat were found incomplete during scrutiny.
In previous year, NSUI had won six and ABVP four seats.
By winning majority of the seat for students in the varsity senate, NSUI has again proved its popularity among four lakh students in colleges spread over Ahmedabad and central Gujarat region including the Panchmahals and Dahod.
State NSUI president alleged that BJP had used all its resources to ensure ABVP trounced NSUI. "But it failed, indicating BJP's popularity among students in the state," Rajput said.
But ABVP's state secretary Ravi Desai said winning more number of seats did not prove NSUI was more popular among students. He said students strength was highest in UG commerce and science faculties which were won by ABVP. As for NSUI victory from five seats, he said NSUI won by a slender margin only.
Those having won from NSUI platform are Siddhrajsinh Chauhan from UG Arts faculty, Jansmukh Chaudhary from PG Commerce faculty, Pravin Vanol from PG Science, Vikramsinh Solanki from B.Ed faculty and Anik Timbalia from law faculty.
