‘There will be huge opportunities for the global nuclear industry to participate in India's nuclear industry.’

Prime minister Manmohan Singh said on Tuesday that the country's nuclear energy programme has allowed India to "think big" and that power from nuclear plants would reduce its over dependence on fossil fuels and combat climate change over the next decades.

He also said there will be "huge opportunities for the global nuclear industry to participate" in India's nuclear industry which is "poised for major expansion".

India sees increased power production as key to sustain its economic growth. The country currently relies on imports for about 70 per cent of its oil needs and the Planning Commission estimates that about 600 million people are not on the national grid.

Addressing an international conference on peaceful uses of atomic energy here, Singh said that 470,000 megawatts of energy could come from Indian nuclear power stations by 2050.

"This will sharply reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and will be a major contribution to global efforts to combat climate change."

The prime minister told delegates at the conference that India is looking forward to the "full and effective" implementation of the agreements it signed with the international community and their reciprocal commitments.

Infrastructure DevelopmentBy: Giri Girishankar | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The opportunity to think big, sparked by the Nuclear Power Program, should give a real boost to the country’s infrastructure development. We can imagine that there will be many, probably, several hundred power plants across the length and breadth of the country. These would need a constant supply of material of different kinds in and out of the plant sites. The network of roads and bridges must be started right away without any delay. Parts of the network would be to very special specifications demanded by the transport of nuclear material and waste. This opportunity should be exploited to accelerate the infrastructure construction work that is currently ongoing. Extra emphasis must be placed on speed of construction as much as the magnitude of construction.
Nuclear Power Program and larger outcomesBy: Giri Girishankar | 01-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Prime Minister Manmohan Singh deserves all the credit for making the massive Nuclear Power Program take shape and become real. It will benefit India in a number of ways including, availability of power across the country, accelerated industrialization, emergence of new industries, improvement in the environment, reduction in dependence on foreign oil, potential innovations in the scientific and technological sectors etc.All of the above will come through only with sustained inspiration, hard work, and perseverance. Mr. Singh hopes for "huge opportunities for the global nuclear industry to participate" in India's nuclear industry. I am sure he and his colleagues in the Ministry are already thinking of the sector-wise reforms that are needed to make this happen. This is also a great opportunity for the Indian industry and business to expand and launch new products. A comprehensive document must be issued describing the potential opportunities that will emerge from this program.
Thanks Mr.Abdul Kalam for teach us think high..By: Rajendran PK, Thrissur | 30-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Now we have to think loudly towards the subject of how cut the use of fossil fuel by 20 percentage of total use by 2025. We have to change our entire country railways to use electricity powered engine, have to invent small nuclear generators that can be used in big trucks, railways engine and transporting vehicle, can solve the power independence of India. This is a dream of Indians and we should hard work and wait to achieve such goals. It is true, as said by MMS that we have to think more bigger! Thanks to Mr.Kalam the former president and scientist who ignited the entire Indian to think high.
Thinking to be more bigger...By: Rajendran PK, Thrissur | 30-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward For India, what are the objective set by the MMS and UPA are to be more clear before THINKING BIG. Is the only objective of Nuclear contract is giving more jobs and business opportunity to US and EU are really meant by MMS? MMS and Soniaji are have any certain time frame for under developed poor and starved population of India to achieve one time bread status without any worry? When India will reach a situation that her population in 100 percentage are able use hygienic toilet facilities? Or when we can reach a social status in such a way that all people gets primary education? So Indian leaders ambitions are too high and it is compared with EU standards, which are not practical and it is only aimed for few of our population. If Mr.Singh is really wants to upgrade Indian, he wants to raise more voice and fights among the International community. By forgetting the poor in India, we cannot reach anywhere in the world community. Mr.MMS is a day dreamer by his nature. He is only a economis
Israel is involved in a long line of kidnapping and assassinations carried out on foreign soil.By: suralisheikh | 30-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Iran, North Korea and Israel can put forward the same argument and say that Nukes make them think big and every nation has its right to defend its borders from foriegn aggression and occupation. There should be no discrimination or double standard in international affairs.India can not and should not support the American view that Iran should not develop nuclear technology where as Israel is allowed to have about 300 nuclear war heads and has the capacity to oblitrate the entire Arab world. Why is India quiet on israel's nuclear capabilities.Israel is involved in a long line of kidnapping and assassinations carried out on foreign soil. There is no immunity from the long arm of Israel. They killed in Norway (the notorious Lillehammer affair), they kidnapped in Rome the Vanunu affair), they bombed the British Library and American Consulate( the Levon affair),they sunk the USS Liberty, they tried to assassinate Joseph Mugabe, and their role in the killing of Kennedy.
Irrelevant opinionBy: Rakesh | 30-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Your response is irrelavant to the report published herein..
Rakesh you are concerned more about India only , I am concerned about India and other nations.By: suralisheikh | 30-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Rakesh, in many ways my comment is relevant, we can not be self centred in international affairs if we are a nation of role model. We say we feel big if we possess nukes, but we want other nations to sign NPT, but we do not want to sign NPT, is not co-related? Every nation can say they want to feel big by developing nuclear technology and that way my comment is very relevant, you are a jingoist nationalist, and I am a jingoist internationalist, you’re concern is the security of our nation, my concern is the security of the whole world, mighty and powerful but small European nations whose populations fall with 50 million can develop nuclear tech, but not Iran whose population is similar can not, so my relevant question is why the discrimination based on fanaticism, faith, region, ideology and the political philosophy. Think deeply and try to kill your bias.
