  • Asserting that terrorism cannot defeat "India's great democracy", President-elect Barack Obama on Saturday spoke to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the Mumbai attacks amid his advocacy for full US support to New Delhi in combating the scourge.

Obama called up Singh in the morning in connection with the Mumbai terror strikes and "expressed his deepest condolences", the Prime Minister's Office said in New Delhi.

Singh apprised him about the developments in Mumbai, where the operation to flush out terrorists ended this morning after 60 hours of gun-fights.

Prior to his telephone call to the Prime Minister, Obama, who will occupy the White House in January, said that the terrorists who targeted innocent civilians could not defeat "India's great democracy" nor "shake the will of a global coalition to defeat them".

He said "the United States must stand with India and all nations and people who are committed to destroying terrorist networks, and defeating their hate-filled ideology."

Maintaining that there is only "one President at a time," Obama said, "We fully support the Bush Administration's efforts to protect American citizens and assist the government of India during this tragic time."

"I will continue to closely monitor the situation on the ground in Mumbai and am grateful for the cooperation of the Bush administration in keeping me and my staff updated," said Obama who is in touch with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as well as with Indian Ambassador Ronen Sen.

Obama said he has sent his "deepest condolences" to the loved ones of the American citizens who died in the outrageous terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

Poor IndiansBy: Neha | 29-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Indian people are very innocent people. They will forget about what happened in Mumbai and will carry on their daily life until another attack happens. Indian Politician loves this drama in india and people over there has no power to do anything at all. Indian people pays so much taxes to protect their politicians but politician are completetly careless regards to indian citizens safety. Truly indian people needs to wake up not politicians.
Great Democracy!!By: George | 29-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Can this be called a democracy? A group of eunuchs at the center, corrupt officials and dirty politicians raped our democracy! There should be a squad for nabbing corrupt politicians and corrupt officials. The army should be given more power. The corrupt individulas shall be grilled by the army. Who else can we trust? We are in a corrupt world! A country sold out for money! We dont need Sonia madame's chamchas as but able ministers who should neither be corrupt not criminal. Is time for the people of India to decide whom to select! Democracy will never be great unless people are educated!!

Mumbai tragedyBy: Jose K Joseph | 29-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward It is a wake up call all Indian Politicians. Hope atleast now they will realise the need to put up a joint front against terrorism. the fight against terrorism is not an attack against any relegion. this fight is against those who have scant respect for the of innocent people, even their own. People of all nation and relegion should join in this fight for the preservation of humanity. It is not going to be quick or easy. Many of us may have to pay a big prize with our life or those who are dear to us. But we have no choice but to face it head on. Congress should consider forming a coalition Govt with BJP to ensure a stablility of the Govt in this fight. Our Muslim brothern should join with the rest of India in our reolve to weed out terrorism from our once peaceful country.
mumbai tragedyBy: deepak dua | 29-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward i fully agree with jose joseph. political parties especially BJP tries to confuse hindus --terrorism has no religion--what we need is a good leader --in my opinion --he should be neither hindu nor muslim--then there is some hope.
Coalition govtBy: Ravishankar | 29-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Excellent idea. Hope this materialises.
