In an attempt to gain favour with China, for the first time since 1991 the US President will not meet Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama when he visits Washington this week.

President Barack Obama who is scheduled to undertake his first visit to China next month has apparently decided not to meet the Dalai Lama son as not to annoy Beijing.

"The US pressured Tibetan representatives to postpone a meeting between the Dalai Lama and President Obama until after Obama's summit with his Chinese counterpart, Hu Jintao, scheduled for next month," Washington Post reported.

The Dalai Lama has met every sitting US president since George Bush senior in 1991. China accuses the Dalai Lama of being a ‘splittist’ aiming to separate Tibet from it.

The last time Dalai Lama was here, in 2007, however, George W Bush became the first sitting President to meet with him publicly, at a ceremony at the Capitol in which he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, Congress's highest civilian award.

The US decision to postpone the meeting appears to be part of a strategy to improve ties with China that also includes soft-pedaling criticism of China's human rights and financial policies as well as backing efforts to elevate China's position in international institutions, such as the International Monetary Fund, the report said.

China has been ramping up pressure on other nations not to receive the Nobel Peace Prize winner.

Trust the US China relationship for onceBy: Malcolm | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward That is non of our business. let us not forget that we are not yet a real economic power yet. Our human development index and even Human rights record are abysmal also. And we have a serious social war with the Moaist going on. Hoards of Indians throng the foreign embassies for Visa without any intention of returning home. I think we should start focusing in house before we look at foreign issues. We have a strong defence force guarding what? Hoard of us Poor Indian need to wait for years before our Law cases are heard. And thousands of the Poor improperly represented Undertrails languish in our Indian jails because of our corrupt police state. We need peace and understanding with China. And the Dalai lama is inconsequential.
Obama is only short term problemBy: arun lal | 02-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward Obama has disappointed his supporters by failing to achieve on any of his promises. He is a good talker but a total failure otherwise. He will not be re-elected in 2012. All we have to do is make efforts to minimise damage to our interests for the next 3 years when this idiot will be gone as a one time wonder.
OBAMABy: Lachman | 01-Nov-2009 Reply | Forward ITS A SHAME THAT AFTER RECEIVING THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE FOR THIS YEAR, OBAMA SHOULD ACT IN THIS COWARD WAY, JUST TO PLEASE THE CHINESE DICTATORS. I ADMIRED OBAMA BEFORE, BUT NOW I HAVE A DISTINCT OPINION OF HIM. I BELIEVE MAN SHOULD STICK TO HIS PRINCIPLES AND MORALS UNDER ALL CIRCUMSTANCES.
