  • The Supreme Court today cautioned Pune-based Symbiosis University against implementing 27 per cent OBC reservation from this year.

After The Indian Express first reported about the university’s move to go ahead with 27 per cent OBC quota for students from this academic year, a student through his counsel Subramanaya Prasad mentioned the issue before the apex court on Monday.

Perusing the arguments, the Court then remarked that it (university) would be granting admissions to students under the 27 per cent OBC quota only “at its own peril”.

Meanwhile, the vacation Bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and P P Naolekar said it would list the petition challenging the university’s admission process for hearing after the summer vacation was over.

Prasad complained that the university had begun the admission process for the academic year 2007-2008 by offering 27 per cent reservations to OBCs in utter violation of the apex court’s order staying the reservation policy of the Central government.

The counsel wanted the petition to be listed during the vacation on the ground that if the popular Pune-based varsity was allowed to grant admission under the OBC quota it would seriously jeopardise the interests of students, since the quota issue is pending in the apex court.

According to the counsel, the university is offering 27 per reservation benefits to OBCs for admissions into various courses conducted by it.

Earlier, the apex court had stayed the implementation of 27 per cent quota in higher educational institutes for OBCs.
