Oberoi to reopen on April 24,with a contemporary look

The flagship hotel of the Oberoi group in Mumbai is set to reopen on April 24,17 months after the 26/11 terror attacks.

The flagship hotel of the Oberoi group in Mumbai is set to reopen on April 24,17 months after the 26/11 terror attacks. While the adjoining Trident Hotel faced less damage and reopened on December 21,2008,the Oberoi group has decided to completely renovate its hotel instead of simply refurbishing the ravaged parts. This is in contrast with the Taj Mahal Palace and Towers; its heritage wing was also heavily damaged in the grenade attack by the terrorists, but has been reopened in phases and is expected to be completely functional in May.

At the group’s annual general meeting last year, chairman PRS Oberoi said,“As the hotel is more than 20 years old,we took a decision to renovate the entire hotel and thus give it a new look. Technology has also changed since the hotel was built in 1986. It is our endeavour to advance this hotel’s technology to make it more contemporary.” In an interview in November 2009 with this publication,Devendra Bharma, executive vice president of Oberoi Hotels and Resorts, had stated that the Oberoi faced severe damage during the siege as the lobby and top floor boardrooms were set on fire, and the soot and smoke caused extensive damage.

The renovated hotel is expected to have a modern look and rooms would be more spacious,as they have been reduced from 327 to 287 in number.

In addition to the three dining options at the hotel, there will be a new bar that is expected to be a trendy. Kandahar, the erstwhile popular Indian restaurant serving food from the north-west frontier, will be replaced by Ziya,an Indian restaurant under the direction of chef Vineet Bhatia.

The UK-based Indian chef holds single Michelin stars for two of his restaurants in London and Geneva, and recently opened Azok at the Oakwood Premier in Juhu. Judging by the offering at Azok, the food at Ziya should be contemporised Indian food with global influences. Bhatia notably is skilled in merging north Indian with south Indian influences. Tiffin, the all-day restaurant will offer the same concept but will be christened Fenix instead. Vetro, the excellent Italian restaurant will retain its name, although there will be a new chef as Emanuele Lattanzi returned to Italy last year to work at the Hassler Hotel in Rome. Bharma could not confirm the name of the new chef, although he did state that “as you know,we have an excellent relationship with the Hotel Hassler in Rome.”
