Condemning violence during a rally organised by Congress here, Odisha Police Association (OPA) today demanded arrest of those who attacked the policemen and a judicial probe into the incident.
"Those involved in attacking and injuring the police personnel during the agitation by Congress here yesterday must be arrested immediately and strong action should be taken against them," OPA President Sawarmal Sharma said.
The government should also order a judicial inquiry into the violent incident that took place on MG Road, Sharma said, adding Crime Branch police should also investigate the incident.
"The criminal activities resorted to by the demonstrators in the name of agitation is deplorable," the OPA President said.
Yesterday, thousands of Congress workers clashed with the police when they tried to gherao the Odisha Assembly building demanding resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik over the coalgate row leaving around 260 people including 60 police personnel injured.
Odisha Assembly proceedings paralysed
Proceedings of the Odisha Assembly were paralysed today as Congress legislators stormed into the well protesting alleged police excesses during a party rally here while ruling BJD MLAs countered them.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, members of the opposition Congress were on their feet alleging attack by police on party demonstrators who held a rally here yesterday.
The angry Congress legislators trooped into the well accusing police personnel of using force, including batons against party rallyists without any provocation.
Shouting slogans against the Naveen Patnaik government and the police action, the opposition members attempted to climb the speaker's podium.
Noisy scenes prevailed in the House as ruling BJD members refuted the allegations levelled by Congress MLAs and alleged that the demonstrators indulged in violence and attacked the police personnel mercilessly.
Placards were also displayed condemning the violent incidents that took place during the demonstration.
