Police on Wednesday said they will open an inquiry against Additional DCP Ravi Shankar and three other policemen against whom a Delhi court ordered registration of an FIR for allegedly extorting money from people with threats to implicate them in a false case.
Incidentally,Shankar was handpicked for investigating the September 7 explosion outside the Delhi High Court that killed 13 people and injured 74 others. He is currently posted with the anti-extortion cell of the Crime Branch.
Police said they were likely to appeal against the acquittal of six persons who were arrested in a 2006 case by the Special Cell team headed by Shankar who was then posted as an ACP. He was promoted this year.
We are yet to receive the court order. We will first analyse it and then decide the future course of action. Most probably we will appeal against the acquittal order. We will register an FIR against the four policemen and after that we will investigate the allegations against them. We have got three days to register the case, a senior police officer said.
Police said they will also seek legal opinion in the case. The other three policemen whom the court wants booked are Inspector Anil Dureja,Sub Inspector Gajendra and Head Constable Hari Kishan.
Shankar is credited with investigating several terror cases in the last two decades and was instrumental in the arrest of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) chief Jagtar Singh Hawara after he had fled from Punjabs Burail Jail by digging a tunnel. His team also cracked the serial transistor bomb blast cases.
He also busted the fake pilot scam which has led to the arrest of more than 15 pilots who secured jobs with the help of fake marksheets
