  • It’s official now: Air India will be the official travel partner for next October’s Commonwealth Games.

The Games organising committee will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the national carrier ahead of the meeting of representatives of all Commonwealth countries to review Delhi’s preparations for the event, it was announced on Monday.

Air India has planned several special packages and fares ahead of the mega event. The plan includes special charters operated between Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, South Africa, Malaysia, Pakistan and Bangladesh. Flights to Toronto will be rescheduled and more flights will be added to the route as Delhi is expecting a big tourist influx from Canada, officials said.

Air India also plans to offer special group fares for both athletes and tourists heading to Delhi, besides allowing extra baggage in several cases. It also has some lucrative schemes of selective upgrades.

The Games organising committee recently signed up Le Passage, an Indian travel agency, for the Games travel office. ITDC’s Hotel Ashoka has already been shortlisted as the hospitality partner for the Games committee.
