    PSUs lose Rs 2.96 a litre on diesel and Rs 6.08 per litre on petrol. The annual losses of the oil companies, as per recent calculations, during the current fiscal could mount to Rs 38,700 crore.

    Asked about rising global commodity prices, Ahluwalia said, rising commodity prices need not worry us. "If the global economy is recovering India will do better and the commodity prices should not cause us to worry," he added.

    Noting that global commodity prices will firm up with recovery in world economy, Ahluwalia said, "we cannot have the benefits of the global recovery and maintain very low commodity prices."

    AUTONOMY FOR OIL SECTORBy: manish chandna | 24-Jun-2009 Reply | Forward BEING ASSOCIATED WITH THE OIL INDUSTRY FOR LAST 15 YRS I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH MONTEK SINGH AHLUWALIA THAT OIL PRICES PARTICULARLY MOTOR FUELS NEED TO BE DEREGULATED AND LINKED TO INTERNATIONAL PRICES .IF THE GOVT TOMMOROW DUE TO RISING CRUDE PRICES FEELS THE NEED TO INSULATE THE DOMESTIC CONSUMER THE SAME CAN BE DONE THRU REDUCTIONS IN EXCISE AND CUSTOMS DUTY . BUT TO PROMOTE ACCOUTIBILTY , EFFICIENCY IN THE OIL PSU;S PVT SECTOR HAS TO BE GIVEN A CHANCE TO OPERATE AGAIN. THE OIL REGULATRY BOARD ALSO NEEDS TO BE GIVEN MORE AUTHORITY AND POWERS.
