Swarnakamal Saha has been busy attending the phone calls since the news of his victory from the Bowbazar seat in the Assembly by-polls was out on Friday. Politics is not something new to him or his family though.
The Trinamool leader was a councillor in his area for 10 years,as politics has always been an active component of his family. His father,Radha Ballab Saha, was a Congress supporter and his uncle Ajit Saha a major Congress leader for long.
I was brought up in an environment where politics was seen as an important activity. Hence,I also decided to join politics. Even in college I was involved with the Chhatra Parishad and then joined the Trinamool, when it was formed, said Saha.
Known for his fight for the rights of bus drivers and conductors,he said: I have been in this area for long. While campaigning I would often feel that I had a strong chance of winning the polls.
His wife is a councillor in the area where he held the same seat for 10 years. Today she is carrying on much of the work he had started.
After his win,the first person he went to meet was party chief Mamata Banerjee. She congratulated people for voting for me which meant they had started fight against the CPM atrocities. My win is against the CPM misrule, said Saha.
To help him contest the polls, his elder son came down to the city with his wife. An MBA from IIM-Calcutta,he is based in Bangalore.
My entire family and I have been glued to the TV from the morning. After my victory,I now want to start working for the people, said Saha.
