In the summer of 2002,a pop-rock single called I like it began to shoot up the international music charts and just as suddenly,an unknown musician called Oliver Sean found himself famous. As he travelled the arc from being a nobody to a somebody, details about him spilled through the internet and breathless fan sites he was Portuguese-Goan-Italian,had been brought up in Goa and was not married.
Now,10 years and two albums later,as Sean travels through India as part of his world tour to promote his new album So Good, the heady success of 2002 still makes him proud The best thing was that people wanted to hear my kind of music,pop-rock, says Sean, who now shuttles between Dubai and Goa.
Sean,30,is on a five-city tour and performs in Delhi at Hard Rock Cafe on May 12. I last performed in Delhi in 2005, he says over phone from Pune. So Good is an example of the change he is trying to incorporate into his music and includes his version of the cult song,Knocking on Heavens Door. What worked with I like it is exactly what is making So Good work his mix of the sounds of Goan music with Italian sensibility. Though he adds Indian and middle-eastern elements to his music,Sean refrains from calling it world music. These are merely elements that I add to pop-rock, says Sean, who was born to a Portuguese-Goan mother and an Italian father.
Sean recently finished making music for a crossover film,Cutting Chai,Dreams High, which is expected to release later this year. I would love to experiment but I can never pull off a Bappi Lahiri or an Anu Malik. I like A R Rahmans music, especially what he did with Roja, he says.
Apart from touring around the world,Sean is busy with his music label,W.O.A International, based in London,Dubai and Goa. It is one of the most sought after independent labels. My aim is to open Indian market to intentional music and we are bringing in Venezulan metal band,Over Hate to India in October, he informs. And,he is still not married.
