Its hard to keep Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah down,at least on Twitter. Yesterday and today,he sent out two tweets, one concerning Afzal Guru, only to backtrack.
A day after the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a unanimous resolution appealing to the President to review her decision on the mercy petitions of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhis assassins,Omar asked today if the reaction would have been as muted to a plea regarding Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
The mercy petition of Guru, who hails from the Valley,is pending with President Pratibha Patil.
If the J&K Assembly passed a resolution similar to the Tamil Nadu one for Afzal Guru, would the reaction have been as muted? I think not, Omar wrote.
His tweet evoked sharp reactions, with the BJP slamming him for his comments and ally Congress distancing itself, calling these his personal views. Within hours,Omar retweeted: I should remember that channels will make a story out of just about anything and that will teach me to shut up.
Not that it is likely to. Last night,he had tweeted on the union cabinets meeting to discuss a Bill that, among other things, would bring the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under the Right to Information Act. I believe the Union Ministers heading sports bodies should have excused themselves from the Sports Bill discussion, he wrote.
Significantly, the union ministers included his father Farooq Abdullah, who heads the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.
Within hours,he had another tweet, regretting his remarks but just. And on a different note the next time I plan to tweet on what Central ministers do someone please tell me to shut up, he said.
Earlier,Omar has landed himself in a spot with Twitter remarks about Yuvraj Singh during the cricket World Cup and about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati coming with her handbag swinging.
