As winter chill fills the air, it is sure to make you crave for a bowlful of warm soup to kick in the wintry feel. In restaurants across the city, community soups are an option for people who look for economical, wholesome meals during the winter. If one is out with friends or family for a meal at a Chinese restaurant, one can opt for a community soup, which is basically a soup which is customised according to the guests. The patrons can select their favourite seasonal vegetables to it or just ask the chef to make a larger quantity of a soup from the menu. On an average, a community soup serves four to six people.
Chung Fa, a restaurant in East Street that has been in the league for over 40 years, lists a number of soups on their menu, out of which the Veg Corn Soup and the Lung Fung Soup are the picks of the season by their customers. While the vegetable corn variety is a thick stock with chopped vegetables and sweet corn, the Lung Fung soup, which is the chef's specialty, is a semi-thick plain blend with bits of shredded chicken, prawns and battered egg.
"Our guests prefer to have soups this season. The demand for soup goes up by 40 per cent during the winter. Soups help balance the chill outside; it is also easily digestible and rather low on calories," says VP Vapra, manager at Chung Fa. The large soups, which serve two people in one portion, are priced between Rs 100 and 120. Though this joint prefers to keep it simple and offers large portions of the soups listed in their menu only, the chef is happy to make minor tweaks to the taste according to the preferences of the guests on the table.
