  • On a day when China renewed its claim on Arunachal Pradesh, the state voted overwhelmingly in Assembly election, with the voter turnout touching 72 per cent by the evening. Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said the figure could go up to 80 per cent when the final figures are tallied. Voting from 11 polling stations in West Kameng district was also webcast.

In Maharashtra, around 60 per cent of the 7.56 crore electorate cast their votes. In the Naxalite-hit Gondia, the voter turnout was 63 per cent.

In Haryana, the voter turnout was 66 per cent. The CEC said figures could go up after the final tally.

The elections were by and large peaceful. The CEC said almost all political parties in Maharashtra had asked for the counting to be deferred after Diwali. The counting is being held on October 22.

Sell away Manmohan By: girija | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Someone wrote at IE that India's reaction is so apologetic that one wonders who reports to whom. But that's the point - why do we expect the family owned Congress to behave like Mahatma's congress - they are two different entities. So, I'd say why just Arunachal Mr. Singh please do sell away Sikkim, may be bihar (that actually would be good for the country!) and even Uttarakhand and UP. On western side you might want to give away Punjab and Rajasthan. After all, as long as Delhi remains -you can continue to lodge meek protests
China a pot boilerBy: Megh | 14-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward I believe its time that India learns to take China by its horns; We should recognise Tibet as a disputed territory, host his holiness dalai lama as a leader of the disputed territory and recognise tibets right to be a sovereign nation. our tolerance of china is sending a wrong signal to china who understand firmness.
