About 5 lakh people offered Eid prayers on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway on Monday Manoj Kumar

Syed Rashid Ali, a small-time vendor in the crowded alleys of Ballimaran in the Walled City, had only heard of the Vatican and seen the Pope on television all these years. But a connection was established on Monday when he heard about the Pope’s message to the Muslims on Eid: come together and fight poverty.

While the Vatican has sent its greetings to the Muslims by post all these years, for the first time a representative of the Pope personally went to meet Muslim leaders and read out the Pope’s open message. The text was released worldwide on September 11, according to leaders.

On Monday, the day of Eid, Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi Archdiocese Fr Franco Mulakkal read out the message to Muslim leaders, including Minority Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid, at Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s residence.

Nabi Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Yahya Bukhari was also present at the event.

“This has come for the first time,” Yahya Bukhari said. “The message talks about Muslim and Christian unity but we should not limit ourselves to that. India has a secular fabric and we are an example of unity.

    “We welcome the message.”

The message is signed by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran and Archbishop Pier Luigi Celata — president and secretary, respectively, of the Pontifical Council. “The Pope has invited all of us to work together to remove poverty,” Mulakkal said.

He said the message will be published in the Archdiocese magazines so that congregation members can work together with Muslims.

Namaz on highwayBy: ramkesav | 22-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Who cares? The courts will not interfere unless a petition is filed. This kind of thing will happen only in india. No minister bothers to question these violations. No media person, however secular he/she may be will even report this abuse. It is only in this country that the majority is held to ransom by the minortities. I am unable to understand why the muslims can not find a suitable alternative place to offer prayers. Why they are ben on using public roads? Is causing disturbance to others is apart of their celebration? will the event not be complete if it is held on some stadium or dround? Will any leader frommuslim clergy think about this and find a permenant solution? We can not expect any from the piliticians for they are after theire votes. The courts will take fifty years to act even if a case is filed. It is only our muslim brothers who should find a way out. Id is an occasion to be happy not to cause hurdles to others. Let our right thinking muslim brothers speak atleast.
EID NAMAZBy: Niranjan | 22-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward I AM SHOCKED TO SEE THE PICTURE IN YOUR NEWSPAPER THAT THE DELHI-GURGAON EXPRESSWAY WAS USED FOR EID NAMAZ. THAT MEANS ALL THE TRAFFIC WAS DIVERTED OR STOPPED TO APPEASE THE MUSLIMS. WHAT IS THE MATTER WITH THE GOVT.? AN ESSENTIAL SERVICE, LIKE AND EXPRESSWAY, WAS STOPPED TO APPEASE THE MUSLIMS? THIS IS GROSS STUPIDITY IF NOTHING ELSE? AN EXPRESSWAY CAN BE USED TO TRANSPORT AN ILL PERSON TO HOSPITAL QUICKLY. BUT NO, IT HAS TO BE USED FOR THE MINORITY FOR VOTE BANK! NEXT THEY MIGHT WANT TO PERFORM NAMAZ AT RASHTRAPATI BHAVAN OR THE PARLIAMENT HOUSE. RIDICULOUS!
