  • Subhana lies in hospital with shrapnel injuries. Hasn’t been told about mother.

Subhana is just four years old, too young to understand the meaning of yesterday’s terror attack in which she lost her mother, Sumaira Khan, 28, and two aunts, Asma Khan, 16, and Ani Khan, 13. As she lies in bed, recovering from her shrapnel injuries, nobody has the heart to tell her that her mother is no more.

Subhana and her seven-year-old brother Ibrahim had accompanied their mother from Mumbai to Jaipur on April 23 to spend their summer vacation with their maternal grandparents. Yesterday, Sumaira and her sisters decided to go shopping, and Subhana tagged along. Ibrahim, however, stayed at home.

According to relatives, Sumaira and the rest caught a rickshaw from outside their house and left for Johri Bazaar. Subhana sat on her mother’s lap. Just as they got off the rickshaw outside National Handloom in Johri Bazaar, there was a powerful blast. It was about 7.30 pm.

Sumaira and Asma died on the spot while Ani succumbed to her injuries at the Sawai Mansingh Hospital. Subhana suffered shrapnel injuries on her leg.

While Asma was a Class VIII student at the Maheshwari School here, Ani was in Class VI at the Angela Sophia School. “All the three girls were brilliant and caring children. They were our strength,” said relative Asif Khan.

Sumaira’s father, Mustafa Khan, who runs a jewellery showroom at the Oberoi Hotel in Mumbai, flew into Jaipur after he was informed about the tragedy. The three sisters were laid to rest in graves next to each other.
