Madhya Pradesh advocate general R N Singh resigned on Monday, accusing Lok Ayukta Justice Ripusudan Dayal (rtd) of indulging in corrupt practices and maligning his image on the day the latter retired after ending his six-year term, marked by several controversies.
Addressing a press conference in Jabalpur where the Madhya Pradesh High Court is located,Singh levelled allegations against Dayal. He misused his position and authority to make money and to further the careers of his two sons, he told The Indian Express over the phone.
The trigger for Singhs resignation was a case of corruption filed against him in the Lok Ayuktas office in which he was accused of getting his Jabalpur bungalow renovated at a cost of Rs 2 crore and amassing property. Corruption charges were also made against his wife Sushila Singh, who is mayor of Jabalpur.
Singh alleged Dayal did not file any FIR against him but leaked the matter to the media to malign his image. I cant continue in office when my credibility is under a cloud because of him (Dayal), said Singh, who was appointed AG on December 23,2003 when Uma Bharati was Chief Minister.
Refuting the allegations,Dayal said he had made money by legal means and that both his sons, who practise in Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court, had enough cases to handle. Property banana koi pap nahi (Its not a sin to amass property), he added.
Whats his credibility to level corruption charges against me? What professional standing does he have? His appointment was a mistake in the first place. He is a politician,so how can his allegations have any credibility? Dayal asked.
The Lok Ayukta said he did not even register any case against Singh and wondered why the allegation was timed with his (Dayals) last working day.
Continuing with his allegations,Singh also said he did not enjoy a good rapport with chief secretary Rakesh Sahni, who wanted him to argue court cases in a particular way. Sahni, however, said he bore no grudge against Singh and always got along with him quite well. I cant believe he could have said such a thing against me, Sahni added.
