On the table: ‘Gurgaon needs better public transport, infrastructure’

Various residents' welfare associations (RWA) and government officials on Wednesday deliberated on "Finding Traffic Solutions for Gurgaon" and discussed civic issues pertaining to the Millennium City.

The stakeholders also discussed various measures to make the city a better place to live in and to put forward different recommendations for government agencies. The workshop was hosted jointly by Gurgaon Renewal Mission and Gurgaon First.

Officials said traffic chaos was the most serious issue in Gurgaon. Residents said quality of infrastructure had deteriorated. The volume of traffic has grown manifold, leading to perpetual congestion at key intersections, officials said. Other issues that have compounded the problem are poorly planned road intersections, inadequate public transport and shortage of parking space, officials said.

Officials spoke about traffic issues and their solutions. HUDA Administrator Praveen Kumar said, "There is an urgent need for sustainable, integrated solutions for transport and traffic problems of Gurgaon. HUDA is looking for a strategic development plan and its proper implementation to reduce the crisis in the city."

Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon councillor Nisha Singh said the Mayor of a given area should be consulted when urban areas, roads and traffic systems are planned.

Officials said several road intersections needed improvements. Major intersections like Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk and others need to be planned better.

They said the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway has become a major bottleneck despite recent efforts. Several measures have been proposed to decongest the toll plaza, including a buyout by the state.

Other recommendations put forward by participants were better coordination between different agencies to overcome the problems caused by multiplicity of transport and traffic management agencies.

Some participants said traffic personnel should be increased and Gurgaon should get a good public transport service with high frequency of buses on various routes.
