On way to Dera, 10 from city killed in accident

While eight members of a family of labourers living in Sector 25 were being cremated on Sunday, news came of two more young girls who died. Their parents were already among those laid on the pyres.

It was a state of utter chaos at the Advance Trauma Centre (ATC) of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) soon after the 10 people were brought in a critical state at 9.30 am. The passenger vehicle they were travelling in had collided head on with a canter near Dakal village in Jind district's Narwana. Rash driving by both the drivers in dense fog led to the accident, suspect police. All those travelling in the passenger vehicle were on their way to attend a religious discourse at Dera Sacha Sauda in Sirsa.

All the victims were related to each other. Of those admitted, Aarti, 7, was declared dead on arrival. "She died in front of me. I was taking her inside the hospital on a trolly when I noticed her sinking, and the next moment doctors said she is no more," said a 20-year-old kin of the victims.

Rohit, 5, had a fracture in his leg and was lying in ATC, crying in pain. A volunteer from the Dera Sacha Sauda stood next to him, trying to comfort the child as his parents were also admitted.

Sandeep Bhateja, a member of the dera, said, "We got a call from Sirsa about the accident this morning and were asked to immediately reach PGI and help the family. We have been helping the family members in getting medicines and other stuff.''

Claiming he belonged to the victims, a security guard of PGI said, "My younger brother is on way to Chandigarh with bodies of all the victims."

Amrit Kaur, a relative of one of the victims, said, "We were in the cremation ground performing the last rites of the parents of two young girls Pooja, 15, and Jyoti, 10, when we got the news that the two sisters also died. Both the girls were admitted in PGI in the morning while their parents had died in Dakal. One of their brothers is also admitted here with fractures."
