Once her favourite, top cop now targets Mamata: ‘no parivartan’

CM's slogan 'Jai Hind,Insha Allah' is at centre of a scathing attack from a senior IPS officer.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee often plays the minority card, even choosing to end her public rallies with “Jai Hind. Insha Allah. Khuda Hafeez”. But this slogan is now at the centre of a scathing attack that she faces from a senior IPS officer — one who was once touted to be one of her favourites.

“To hell with this politics of Insha Allah,Khuda Hafeez,” writes top cop Nazrul Islam in a chapter of his latest book which is yet to hit the stands. While not naming the Chief Minister, the writings leave no doubt about who he is targeting.

Written on October 21,the chapter,“Insha Allah,Khuda Hafeez”,reflects on how such slogans have become a part of electoral politics. “It does not cost anything to say Insha Allah,Khuda Hafeez. The vote is over and the goal is achieved. But the present leaders in power do not seem to be interested in doing anything for the Muslims,” he writes.

“Insha Allah,Khuda Hafeez are pious words for devout Muslims… But recently, some ‘neta-netri’ are making indiscriminate use of these words without realising the real import of its meaning… It is utterly disgusting and reprehensible,” he adds.

While Nazrul — the author of over 50 books, some of which have won awards — has often taken to writing as a mode of protest (he did it earlier during Jyoti Basu and Buddhadeb Bhattacharya’s terms too),the IPS officer was known to be close to Banerjee. Earlier, when she was union railway minister,Banerjee is reported to have personally inducted Nazrul as Executive Director (Security) in Delhi. When she became chief minister, she brought him back to the state.

But for the past three months,Nazrul has found himself in an uncomfortable position. The official website lists him as “OSD (coordination) ex-officio Principal Secretary (Home)…(not yet joined)”.

But Nazrul has refused to take up the post, citing it as an “irregular order”.

In several letters to the CMO,he has argued that the ADG’s post is equivalent to a Principal Secretary’s post in the IAS cadre. He says he should be given a Principal Secretary’s post in the CMO to make his posting “regular”.

In his new book, the IPS officer also writes about the ‘misuse’ of Iftaar. During Ramzan,Banerjee was seen attending Iftaar parties almost every afternoon. “Only the devout Muslims, observing roza in a steadfast manner, are entitled to Iftaar. But these leaders, after a day of abundant food… would land in Iftaar parties… This should stop,” he writes.

“The ‘netri’ (woman leader) while speaking in the Assembly claimed that she has already fulfilled 90 per cent of the promises she made for Muslims. She wants to thrust upon everyone to accept this fact. The meaning of this is very simple… ‘I have done nothing and I would do nothing ever for you’,” he writes.

“It’s time we unite and raise our head, protest and get our legitimate rights. We do not want to beg. We must move forward with our heads held high,” he says.

Another chapter of the book is called “Parivartan” — the buzzword in Bengal for months now. “There has been no change for the common people at large. Everyone is falling at the feet of the neta-netris…the ministers are busy raising funds for the party’s next election and the bureaucrats are busy in keeping their chairs intact… That’s why the change has not brought about a real change in the lives of the common people,” he writes.

“People will not show any mercy. It is wrong to assume that the change has come because of some neta-netri. People will again seek change and remove those in power now if they fail to deliver,” he warns.
