Pune Customs officials arrested yet another passenger for trying to smuggle gold. Faiyaz Ahmed Saipoddin Khadia (33),who was allegedly smuggling 1.23 kg gold valued at Rs 25.72 lakh,is from Karwar and is the second person from Karnataka to be arrested for smuggling gold,the first one was arrested in November.
Khadia,who landed at Pune International Airport from an Air India Dubai flight early Saturday morning,was intercepted by Customs officials from Air Intelligence Wing at the green channel. He was found to have concealed four packets containing gold ornaments weighing 1.225 kg kept under the left pocket of his trousers,inside the underpants, the remand application stated.
According to Krishna Ratnaparkhi,special counsel,customs department,Khadia was produced before special court of judicial magistrate first class S R Bhor on Saturday for violation of Section 135 (possession of or is in any way concerned in carrying,removing,depositing,harbouring,keeping,concealing,selling or purchasing or in any other manner dealing with any goods which he knows are liable to confiscation) of the Customs Act. Khadia was remanded in 14-day magisterial custody till December 23.
In two recent cases,the customs officials had arrested Noor Moinuddin Bappa from Bhatkal in Karnataka for smuggling 1.6 kg gold,worth Rs 38.2 lakh. In October,garment dealer Badrul Munir Ambidatti (47) of Kerala was arrested when he landed in Pune from Dubai for allegedly smuggling gold worth Rs 63 lakh.
