A 35-year-old man was killed and six others injured when a speeding Maruti Swift car rammed into a delivery vehicle on the Mathura road- Bhairon Road T-point,early on Sunday morning. According to police,preliminary investigations have revealed that the errant vehicle had jumped the traffic signal before ramming into the tempo.
The incident occurred around 12.10 am at the traffic signal on Mathura Road,when the delivery van being driven by Yogesh Sharma (35) was taking a turn towards Ring Road.
Police said the four friends in the car,who were returning from a get together at India Gate,were headed towards the zoo. The car crash into the left side of the delivery vehicle. The tempo driver was accompanied by Amit (24) and Deepak (31).
Deepak,who suffered minor injuries,told the police,We were returning from a jagran in South Extension and were heading towards Ring Road when the car rammed into us from the left side. After the impact,the car skip for a few meters,finally halting on the opposite side of the road.
Meanwhile,based on preliminary investigations and eye witness accounts,police said the errant driver had jumped the traffic signal. One of the witnesses to the incident was a sub-inspector patrolling the area.
Police have identified the four men in the car as Abhishek,Rohit,Vicky and Hemant,all in their 20s. It has not been ascertained yet who was driving the Swift.
Hemant is a resident of Hari Nagar and Abhishek,Rohit and Vicky are residents of Tughlakabad.
The injured were rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital (RML),from where Vicky was taken to AIIMS Trauma Center and Yogesh to Lady Hardinge Hospital,where he succumbed to injuries. Police said Yogesh,who is from Uttar Pradesh,is survived by his wife and two children.
A case of rash and negligent driving under Sections 279/337 of the IPC was registered at the Tilak Marg police station. But subsequent to Yogeshs death,the case will now be converted into that of causing death by negligence under Section 304 (a) of the IPC.
A senior police officer said,The case will now be transferred to the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal,following which a Test Identification Parade will be conducted to identify the driver.
According to police,the car is owned by Abhisheks father Satyendra who is a medical practitioner.
