To keep the Capital blooming during the Commonwealth Games, the civic bodies of the Capital and National Capital Region have decided to jointly plant one lakh saplings on July 5. A common date has been chosen so that all saplings bloom the same time around the Games.
Besides the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Council of Delhi (MCD),civic bodies of the National Capital Region were asked to carry out the exercise by the Planning Commission to ensure greenery is maintained during the Games.
Fifteen thousand saplings, both leafy plants and flower plants, will be planted by the NDMC and MCD on Monday at roundabouts and parks. The NCR,covering Noida and Ghaziabad, will see 80,000 saplings being planted.
The Planning Commission informed us that we should ascertain the places where saplings would be planted so that Delhi truly looks beautiful during the Commonwealth Games. Delhi can always use some more greenery, said an official from the Horticulture department of NDMC.
The NDMC is also carrying out a drive to improve greenery around its footpaths by creating green buffer zones where bushes separate the footpaths from the roads.
MCD will plant almost 11,000 plants in their jurisdiction. We cover almost 95 per cent of the Delhi. We can accommodate saplings in some of our parks, said a Horticulture official of the MCD.
According to officials, agencies will maintain the plants and will have to ensure that they are watered and tendered properly by horticulture officials.
