Every big company should plant nearly one lakh trees a year and every citizen should plant five trees every year and contribute to protecting the environment,said Shrikrishna Ambardekar,senior vice president,Tata Motors.
He was speaking at the commencement ceremony of a tree plantation drive by Maj Gen Gautam Murthy and himself,to be jointly carried out on defence land at Dehu Road by the Ministry of Defence,Dehu Road Cantonment Board,Tata Motors,Brotherhood Foundation and Rotary Club Akurdi.
Brig S S Lamba,president,Dehu Road Cantonment Board,Mohan Kulkarnim senior general manager,environment dept,TATA Motors,Kishor Ghude,assistant general manager,horticulture and environment department,Shrirang Dhavale,senior manager,community development dept,Hemant Agarwal,brotherhood foundation,Dr Shrirang Gokhale,president,Rotary Club of Akurdi were present on the occasion.
Tata Motors institutes Yamunanagar Community Development Centre and Shahunagar Community Development Centre,along with students and teachers of Modern High School,participated in the drive.
Ambardekar said the problem of global warming is getting graver by the day. Every day,carbon is generated on a large-scale globally. To reduce its percentage and increase the oxygen level,tree plantation is necessary on a large-scale too., he said.
Though Tata Motors has vowed to plant one-lakh trees this year,around two lakh hands are required for it,said Ambardekar. Emphasis on conservation along with plantation is necessary,he added.
Gen Murthy expressed concern over the reduction in the green layer of earth owing to rapid urbanisation, he said.
