The two young men who died in the violence outside Azad Maidan on Saturday were identified as 24-year-old Ahmad Umar and 18-year-old Aftab Khan.
While Home Minister RR Patil ordered a magisterial inquiry into the deaths,he said at least one definitely died of bullet injuries. Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik said one person is believed to have died in police firing.
Both were brought dead to St. George Hospital.
Friends of Aftab said he was a Commerce student and a resident of Kurla. “He did not go to CST for the protest meeting,” said a friend who came with the family to JJ Hospital. “He had come for some other work and unfortunately got caught in the violence,” said Bahadur,one of his friends who lives in the same neighbourhood.
Dr T P Lahane,dean of J J Hospital,where the bodies are to be taken for post- mortem,said,”It would not be possible to make any definite statement about the cause of the death of the two persons until the police panchnama is filed.”
