  • A lower court on Tuesday upheld an order in which a Hoshiarpur resident was sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment for causing death in an accident. The Court of District and Sessions judge K K Garg dismissed the appeal filed by Gurmail Singh, who is accused of causing the accident and the subsequent death.

On the day of mishap in 2003, the victim Kashmiri Lal was returning from Saketri on a scooter. On reaching the regulator end of Sukhna Lake, a Swaraj Mazda hit the scooter leaving him injured. The driver, Gurmail Singh, sped away from the spot. A case under section 279, 304 A of the IPC was registered against him for causing death due to negligence.

The court of Judicial Magistrate First Class Manisha Jain, in its order dated February 8, 2008, stated that Gurmail Singh was driving the vehicle rashly and sentenced him to one-year imprisonment.
