Two weeks after the Maharashtra Anti Terrorism Squad filed a detailed chargesheet against brothers-in-law Abdul Latif Shaikh and Riyaz Ali for their alleged plot to conduct terrorist strikes at various places in Mumbai, their lawyer moved a bail application stating that the duo was wrongly inthe case.
Latif and Riyaz were arrested for allegedly plotting a terror attack on the ONGC administrative office in Bandra,Thakkar Mall in Borivali and Mangaldas Market in Kalbadevi.
According to the chargesheet filed by the ATS on June 10,they stumbled upon the accused while tracking the plotters of the Pune German Bakery blast.
ATS in the FIR mentioned that they had a tip-off… But the police in the sanction order had sought permission to track their phone calls as part of German Bakery blast investigation. There is no consistency in the FIR and chargesheet, states the bail application.
On March 6,following an order by additional chief secretary (Home) Chandra Iyengar, two mobile numbers registered under the names of Latif and Riyaz were tracked as the ATS suspected the duos involvement in the German Bakery blast. However, only after tracking them for over a week before their arrest on March 14,did the team unearth another alleged conspiracy planned by them along with their accomplice Khan Bashir Ahmed Ainul Haq,a fugitive in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.
Minute details like when did the accused procure their passports is mentioned in the chargesheet but there is no mention of the source from where the duo had allegedly procured petrol to set their targets on fire. By now,at least the source should have been found, said defence lawyer Ramdayal Chauhan.
The ATS has over 60 independent witnesses mentioned in the chargesheet.
