An online campaign has been initiated by some people to garner support for Dr Verghese Kurien’s nomination for Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award.
An online petition is being circulated mentioning Dr Kurien's achievements. The petition says that Kurien has been instrumental in transforming the lives of 13 million farmer families across the country. It further states, “As the chief architect of the ‘Operation Flood,’ he was able to leverage an initial investment of Rs 1,000 crore into regular annual income of Rs 1,00,000 crore for Indian farmers.”
The petition further urges the Government of India to confer Bharat Ratna on Kurien as a fitting tribute to his accomplishments.
Pawan Singh, one of the individuals who is part of the campaign, said, “The petition has got tremendous response from the Internet community as the number of online signatures (supporting it) has crossed hundreds in just a couple of days.”
Singh said, “The petition will be sent to the President and the Prime Minister of India urging the government to confer Bharat Ratna on Kurien in recognition for his immense contribution.”
