  • The facts speak for themselves, and they unambiguously expose the Maoist insurgency for what it is: a brutal, murderous, illegal war against the state of India. It is moulded in utter cynicism, so lacking in common human sympathy that it destroys those it purports to champion and negates the logic of “moral support” that certain sections of urban civil society may tend to profess towards it, whether the environs of a Kobad Ghandy or sundry “intellectuals”. For years now, Naxalites have been killing security personnel and civilians continuously and consistently, with a ruthlessness that doesn’t culminate in the beheading of Jharkhand Special Branch Inspector Francis Induwar on Tuesday, but one that is epitomised in that act of murder and that could exert itself even more ferociously if it is not countered urgently. Maoist violence is not about any ideology or socio-economic cause. It is the country’s gravest law and order problem. Let there be no equivocation on that.

As Home Minister P. Chidambaram stated last month, left-wing extremism affects 20 states, and over 2000 police station areas in 223 districts in those states. He also catalogued that, in 2008, 1591 incidents of Naxalite violence resulting in 721 deaths were reported. By end-August this year, that figure already stood at about 580. While 231 security personnel were killed in Naxalite violence in 2008, 250 had already died this year at the time of the home minister’s statement. Induwar was the 339th policeman killed by Maoists in Jharkhand since 2003. If those figures don’t speak up for the thankless, risky job that security personnel do — how they burn both ends left beyond a doubt by the Nalco siege of April in Orissa, when their squalid living conditions made headlines — then what will? And figures of civilian deaths closely mirror those of security personnel. This is a war against the idea and existence of the democratic Indian state and its people — and that includes the poor tribals and farmers in whose cause the Maoists claim to fight.

Random mind and blind eyes.By: Narendera Gowswami | 09-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward The naxalite and maoist insurgency is nothing short of old dacoits in more modern styles; but this time they are able to preach and make pupils disgruntled within society itself rather than proclaimed outlaws. They are nothing but a bunch of random minds and blind eyes; merciless killing machines. And, why do they survive, and how can they last so long when any sane person would be nauseated from their doings. Thanks, many many thanks to ourselves; especially our political class in power in different times, who have seen our policemen, soldiers and personnel in uniform fall to their bullets and daggers without any sweat or sympathy for so long. At times, it makes one wonder that whether we (including the ones in-charge) ourselves suffer from the same shortcomings; a random uncontrolled mean and corrupt mind which is blind to any light of sanity. Or else, how can we explain so much of such bloodshed, which would have been enough to cause a revolution or revolt anywhere else inthe world.
Indians dont analyse whey they have problems... terrorism ...voilence ..etcBy: nitin | 08-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Indians have a short memory and never look back is to what went wrong and thats why violence keeps propping up almost all pars of india with different names. No scientific approach to the problem.. just wants the guns to kill the dissidence. No think of who cornered to these people to pick up guns... why is so much hatred...they are not animals.. something is wrong ..but political system dont want to look inside as they will find they are more criminal then the criminals itself....
Thanks IEBy: sandipan | 08-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Thi is the first and the boldest piece of editorial I have acome across that unequivocally condemns maoists and demands ruthless action at the same time. Also, thanks for exposing the double-standards of so called "intellectuals", whose publicity thrives upon speaking for these brutal gunmen. More than the maosists themelves, the Indian state needs to crush the freedom of these self-proclaimed Intellectuals, mercilessly. For exmaple, in West Bengal, a category of film-makers/actors have become overnight celebraties and (intellectuals!!!) by canvassing for these maoists. The picture of a now-obscure Aparna Sen with red scarp around her forehead rushing to lalgarh (in company with a small time TV actor, Kaushik) in protest of counter-maoists ops, is only too vivid in memory. Overnite, two cine-actors became celebraties. Such persons should be gagged by China style, to give a taste of their own medicine. Thanks IE, keep it up. People like You are our hope to keep this nation intact.
short time gainsBy: M K Keswani | 08-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward It is well known fact these problems are created, supported and flourish under our political system. Various politicians directly or indirectly to counter their opponents support such activities.Be it in Punjab, Naxalites or Manipur these unlawfull activities are supported by politicians for their gains. It is stupid to think that such problems can even stand for short time, forget years, against might of this country. The day political system decides such activities shall cease. S S Ray demonstreted in WB by wiping our Naxals in 70s, Indira Gandhi made sure to end militancy in Punjab. Let us see what this goverment does.
We have neglected it for longBy: Rohra Gyan | 08-Oct-2009 Reply | Forward Naxal problem is not new. It is decades old. We have allowed it to grow from a small thorn bush to a mighty tree.Society and Government need to interact with the people, influenced by the movement, and simultaneously act against perpetrators ,and master minds behind, ruthlessly. We need to allocate budget, and see that the people's problems are addressed at ground level, rather than the money getting frittered away in administration.
