Op X: Patil hails women officers as Durga

Praising the work done by Jail Department officials in implementing Operation X under which 26/11 attacker Ajmal Kasab was executed, Maharashtra Home Minister R R Patil on Friday compared two women officers involved in it, Medha Gadgil and Meeran Borwankar, to Goddess Durga.

Speaking at a police function here, Patil said, "Today I feel very proud while I praise Jail Department officers who carried out Kasab's execution very swiftly while maintaining complete confidentiality. The responsibility of successfully carrying out the operation was on two women officers, Principal Secretary Medha Gadgil and Additional IG (Prisons) Meeran Borwankar. Both my sisters have done their job with impeccable finesse and utmost professionalism. They have also proved to the world that, like Goddess Durga, Indian women are quite capable of eradicating evil forces that are proliferating fast."

Two life convicts in Rajiv assassination case approach HC

Two Sri Lankan nationals, undergoing life imprisonment in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, have filed habeas corpus pleas in the Madras HC, challenging their incarceration, after completing 20 years in prison.

In their separate petitions, B Robert Payas and S Jayakumar contended their detention in prison beyond 20 years violated their fundamental right under Article 21 of the Constitution. The life convicts, serving their sentences at Puzhal Central Prison here, contended that the date of release of prisoners sentenced to life, has to be calculated as per rules 236 and 341 of Tamil Nadu Prison Rules, 1983. The rules specify that imprisonment for life for the purpose of calculation of normal date of release shall be deemed to be sentences of imprisonment for 20 years.
