  • The Punjab Police recovered nearly one kilogram of opium from the car of a principal of a Shiromani Gurdawara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC)-run school, late on Thursday night.

Harjit Kaur, principal of Bhai Nand Lal Public School in Anandpur Sahib, was travelling with her husband Jagjit Singh, when their car was intercepted near Nangal Chowk around 11 pm.

Led by city SHO Manvir Singh Bajwa, a police party searched the car and recovered the contraband from the rear seat.

After registering a case under Sections 18, 61 and 85 of the NDPC Act, the police arrested Jagjit. The principal has been named in the FIR, but her role is being examined, the police said.

Jagjit was produced in the court of Ropar Chief Judicial Magistrate S P Sud today, who remanded to police custody for a day.
