Three opposition parties in Mizoram announced on Tuesday that they will work together in the upcoming state Assembly elections through a seat-sharing agreement.
The agreement, which was signed after weeks of hectic negotiations, was at one point almost thrown out by the largest party, the Mizo National Front (MNF).
While the MNF,which has formed the government thrice in the past, will field candidates in 31 seats, the Mizoram Peoples Conference (MPC),which has formed the government twice, will field candidates in eight seats. The third party in the alliance, the Maraland Democratic Front, will field one candidate.
Interestingly, the MPC will not contest from a seat that has for decades been the bastion of its erstwhile leader,Brigadier (retd) T Sailo. It is,therefore, unclear which seat his son and current MPC chief Lalhmangaiha,a retired Indian Revenue Service officer who took over the reins of the party earlier this year, will contest from.
The new alliance has, however, not announced which candidates will contest from which seats or who their chief ministerial candidate would be if they win the elections. They said they will kick off the joint campaign from Friday.
