  • An anti-gay rights activist pleaded before the Delhi High Court that legalising homosexual acts would lead to spread of HIV and endanger the family system in the country.

Senior BJP leader B P Singhal, who is opposing the plea of decriminalisation of gay sex, submitted in his written submission that on the line of western countries such behaviour could not be legalised in the country as it has different moral values.

"Unlike foreign countries, where life only means fun and enjoyment, life in India develops a meaning only when we serve with love and affection to our parents and all members of our families," he said.

"There is an increasing tendency of homosexuals in India to indulge in group sex. What is even more disturbing is that in the name of HIV/AIDS control, they try to get safe places for carrying out perverted sexual practices on a collective scale," Advocate H P Sharma, appearing for Singhal said in the submission filed before a Bench comprising Chief Justice A P Shah and Justice S Muralidhar.

"Homosexuality will adversely affect the public health and in the name of thrill, enjoyment and fun the young shall walk into the trap of homosexual addiction. The tragic aspect of this is that alcohol, drugs and disease are the natural concomitants of homosexual activity," he said.

Sighal response came on a petition filed by gay rights activists seeking decriminalisation of gay sex among consenting adults which, at present, is an offence. Section 377 of Indian Penal Code provides a punishment upto life imprisonment for indulging in gay sex.

He countered the gay rights activists' contention who had earlier pleaded that gay sex should be legalised in the country as many countries in Asia and Europe have done so.

Bigger Battles to fightBy: MN | 02-Dec-2008 Reply | Forward Mr. Singhal, I would rather have the politicians fight bigger and more apt battles like dowry, female infanticide, corruption, poverty, illiteracy, terrorism. Can you please do something about those? Seriously! Please do something about those! When did the primary agenda of a politician from a democratic country become policing the personal lifestyle choices of its people?
Burning issue of the day!!!By: Jayadevan | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward Singhalji, homophobia is a Western Christian disease which is found in the fundamental Christian sects in America and the Protestants in Africa. Surely, we are not with these uncultured Amrikis and Habshis? Homosexuality is not just sexual intercourse between people of the same sex, which is often resorted to by heterosexuals, too, for many reasons. It is a state of mind. Now, just the fact that I cannot understand it does not mean that I should condemn it. Why see something dirty in consensual sexual relationships between two adults? Why not concentrate your energies on the flesh trade in which thousands of non-consenting women and children in our country are sold and moved like cattle? Where a pre-pubescent girl is forced to entertain twenty customers in a day? A study in 1997 said there were only 5 lakh child prostitutes in India. Too small a problem, compared to the queers? Prostitution in Mumbai alone generates Rs.1500 crore in a year. Why disturb it? The GDP might go down!
We are not your enemiesBy: Jaster | 18-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward yes...blame it all on the homosexuals...after all, the straight people have done such a great job at protecting the sanctity of marriage and upholding the standard of morals. However, for the anti-gay rights activist, let me ask you this simple question: How does me, a gay person, getting my deserved rights, affect you, a straight person, in any way? And why do you care either? Why do you think you have the rights to tell me who to love or how to love? Before you start protesting against anybody's rights, first educate yourself and learn that homosexuality has been a fabric of human societies since time immemorial. It's nothing new. Why, even in the natural world, there are lots of examples of animals engaging in gay sex. Such hatred towards homosexuality is borne out of complete ignorance.
Traditional MarriageBy: Neena | 17-Nov-2008 Reply | Forward It will be beneficial..if people come out in open w/ their Gay status. It will be to help all the straight people getting married to all the straight people like them and NOT gay!!What is the Indian family system gotta do with that!!Making babies (esp. for a baby boy)is all people looking for..wake up! people we have already crossed 1 billion mark!!
