  • The BJP apparently has become a party where a few individuals call all the shots, based on their whims and hardline stance on all issues. The machinations of these few and their uncompromising vindictiveness are destroying the BJP. The question is: who is fooling whom? Are the top BJP leaders doing the fooling or being fooled? In any case, strife within the party bodes ill for India. The BJP cannot abdicate its responsibility to the country as the main opposition party.

    Be fearless

This refers to ‘Tackle ‘big fish’ firmly...’ (IE, August 26). The PM deserves credit for speaking the truth. Law enforcers often tend to go easy on the rich and powerful. The CBI needs to act without fear as it is only through pinning down and eradicating corruption that the country can optimise its socio-economic performance.

In the midst of a severe drought and a global recession, the Union government has made the right choice as per its finance minister is concerned (‘Ambani’s must...’, IE, August 27). Pranab Mukherjee may be viewed as a Congress old timer and he may not have Manmohan Singh’s reformist credentials, but he has previous experience in the job and is a very able decision-maker. He had deftly managed the economy in the ’80s, and in the current context, has proved that he can think out of the box and is not bound by the old order.

Hunger strike by IIT professorsBy: N V S N Murthy - Scientist | 24-Sep-2009 Reply | Forward Hunger strike by IIT professors is quite genuine and well justified since the pay structure announced by the HRD ministry in August was too much lower than their eligibility. The remuneration for directors of the IITs, the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISc), Bangalore, and the National Institute of Industrial Engineering was fixed at Rs. 80,000 (2000 UD dollars) which is nothing but an insult. Considering their value, contribution and today’s scenario – this humiliating Rs. 80,000 must be increased to at least Rs. 1,50,000( 3000 US dollars), in fact, it must be Rs.2,00,000 (4000 USD). Otherwise, we are really dishonouring our national scientific and technological assets responsible for producing engineers and scientists essential for efficient and effective growth of our nation. Added to this, government must understand a fact that salary is the only income to the professors of IISc/IIT unlike IIM professors who earn a lot through consulting assignments.
