For Safer Delhi Special task force decides on a slew of measures; Shinde meets Sheila, Khanna and police chief; number of phone helplines increased

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde held separate meetings with Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna and Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Wednesday to take stock of measures taken to ensure the safety and security of women in the Capital in the wake of the gangrape of a 23-year-old woman who later died of injuries.

Dikshit also called on the Prime Minister earlier in the day to brief him on the action initiated by the state government in the past couple of weeks.

"I told the Prime Minister about what the people who have been coming to me want from an elected government," Dikshit said. She said she had not demanded that the Delhi Police be put under the charge of the Delhi government instead of the Home Ministry, which currently controls it.

She said during her meeting with Shinde, she told him that "something more" needs to be done to make people, especially women, feel safe in Delhi.

"Law and order is not with the Delhi government, so I suggested some measures that can be taken by the Home Ministry, like induction of more women in the police forces, installation of more CCTV cameras in public places and public transport," she said.

Khanna, meanwhile, had a lengthy meeting with Shinde during which Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar was also present. Both of them are learnt to have briefed the Home Minister about the initiatives and decisions taken by the administration to make Delhi a safer city.

After the meeting, Shinde said that he would reveal all the decisions taken during the past couple of weeks at his monthly press conference on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the special task force consisting of officials from the Home Ministry and Delhi administration has directed Delhi Police to increase the number of telephone helpline numbers for citizens. It has been agreed:
