Ordnance factory accident leaves 4 injured

An accident at Ordnance Factory, Dehu Road, on Tuesday left four workers injured, including one in a critical condition. The incident took place at Ordnance Factory, Dehu Road, at 10.40 am Tuesday when a particular composition that the four workers were mixing went off accidentally, said officials. The factory has ordered an internal inquiry into the incident.

The injured have been identified as B T Sonje, H V Padale, N N Akulwar and Malik Arjun Kshirsagar. An official spokesperson said, "Sonje injured his hand and has been admitted to Ruby Hall Clinic." According to Dr Kiran Borude, in-charge at the casualty department at Ruby Hall Clinic, Sonje's condition is critical. Padale suffered superficial injuries with minor bruise around his left eye while Akulwar got hurt in the right shoulder. They are under observation. According to Dr J S Shinde, managing director of Surya Hospital, Kshirsagar also had superficial injuries with burns on his face and left hand.

According to officials, the four are experienced employees and were working on a chemical composition in an area called Danger Building. "The workers — Danger Building Workers as they are designated — were mixing a particular composition when the mishap took place. They are experienced professionals who have been working with the factory for years. An internal departmental inquiry has been ordered," officials said.

Initially when the news of the mishap broke out, it was being rumoured as a blast. But the official said, "It was not a blast. It may be called a minor accident. There has been no damage to property.

Senior inspector Ram Jadhav of Dehu Road police station said, "Our primary probe suggests that this was an accident and that there is no foul play. The incident took place when two substances were being mixed for some process. Prima facie, it looks all the precautions were taken. People are employed at the factory only after they are made aware of the risks involved here. The employees who got injured and those present are experienced staff."
