The state Criminal Investigation Department probing the rape of a 29-year-old Catholic nun in Kandhamal appealed to the victim on Sunday to contact the police to help identify the culprits quickly.

The nun, who was raped by one of the 40-odd members of a mob on August 25 afternoon in an NGO building, left the state soon after the incident.

On Saturday, she told some TV channels that she could identify the main assailant and others if they were brought before her, but added she was afraid of returning to the state.

In her FIR, she had alleged that she was paraded semi-naked on the road after the gruesome incident while several armed policemen sat as mute spectators.

CID Inspector General of Police Arun Ray told The Indian Express at Baliguda that the police will provide her all security.

“I am requesting her to come out and identify the accused. We are ready to go anywhere for identification of the accused. The CID will not leave any stone unturned to help her out,” Ray said.

The CID official added that it would not be long before the rapist is brought to book. “Please give us some time. We will nab the culprits and submit the chargesheet before the stipulated date of 120 days,” he said.

CID Inspector Dilip Mohanty has been appointed investigating officer in the case. On Sunday, Mohanty visited Kanjamendi village in K Nuagaon block and Jan Vikash where the rape was committed.

The CID inspector is also planning to fly to New Delhi by Monday to speak to the rape victim. CID officials said the nun’s return was necessary to crack the case.

Meanwhile, a day after T V Peter, procurator of Sambalpur Diocese, alleged that the 22-year-old female caretaker, a Hindu, of an orphanage was gangraped before being burnt, police denied the charges.

DGP Manmohan Praharaj said the woman, in her dying declaration, did not mention rape.

DIG, Northern Range, Yogesh Bahadur Khurania said neither the postmortem nor medical examination found any evidence of rape. He also said the case was being directly supervised by the Baragarh SP and if any person had anything to say in the case, they should do so before the police.

Twenty people, including the key accused, have been arrested in the case so far.
