Embarrassed over the alleged rape charges levelled by a nun during the Kandhamal violence, Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed top cops to identify the police personnel deployed at K Nuagaon when the incident took place, official sources said.
Patnaik, who indicated 'stringent action' against more police personnel, asked Kandhamal district magistrate Kishan Kumar and SP Praveen Kumar, to jointly submit a detailed report on the incident within 24 hours.
The direction was issued separately after Patnaik reviewed the situation in Kandhamal on Thursday, sources said.
The chief minister issued the direction after the nun had repeatedly alleged that the police did not come to her rescue when the crime was being committed.
The nun had even alleged in a statement made at a news conference recently that the police personnel were friendly with the miscreants who assaulted her.
Though government had placed the then Officer-in-charge of Baliguda police station, K N Rao under suspension on charge of not taking immediate steps after the nun filed the FIR on August 26, the victim had said she did not have faith in Orissa police even though senior cops had urged her to cooperate in the investigation.
She had, on the other hand, demanded a CBI probe into the incident.
