Orissa man held for FB mosque post on Dec 6

The Rourkela police have arrested a man for allegedly posting on his Facebook page a photo of Hanuman superimposed on a mosque, booking him under the controversial Section 66(A) of the IT Act.

"Pintu Sahu, 26, had put up the photo on December 6 and sent it to his friends. After we got complaints of such a photo circulating, we arrested him. The photo created religious tension in Rourkela and other places in Sundargarh district," Rourkela Additional SP Sudarshan Sethi said.

Sahu, who runs a hardware shop in Rourkela, has reportedly confessed to the posting. The ASP said they had checked his computer for the "objectionable" picture.

Besides the IT Act, Sahu has been charged under Sections 153(A), 295(A) and 298 of the IPC for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and for hurting religious feelings.

Under Section 66A of the IT Act, a person who sends, by means of a computer resource or a communication device, "information that is grossly offensive or has menacing character or any information which he knows to be false, but for causing annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred or ill-will, can be prosecuted".

The Act has been in the news since the arrest of two girls in Maharashtra for a comment regarding the shutdown in Mumbai after Bal Thackeray's death.
