A 32-year-old man, Pappu Salve alias Sunil, who was released from jail in May last year after serving a 10-year sentence in a rape and attempt to murder case, has been arrested for allegedly raping and killing a nine-year-old in Shirdi on December 28.
Salve is reported to have abducted the minor from Kalikanagar area of Shirdi and raped her near the Shirdi railway station. Her decomposed body was recovered by the police about a kilometre from the Shirdi railway station. The victim's parents had filed a complaint against Salve, who was arrested in Manmad on Friday night.
Salve, who reportedly moved to Shirdi about two months back, was said to be living with his second wife and two children. He has been booked for abduction, rape and murder of the minor, and sent to police custody till January 17.
The first case relating to rape and attempt to murder of another nine-year-old girl was registered against Salve at the Ambad police station (Nashik) on December 8, 2002. While he was out on bail in this case, he was alleged to have raped and murdered an eight-year-old girl in Sinnar (Nashik) on October 31, 2003.

In 2008, the Sinnar sessions court convicted him and sentenced him to death in the 2003 case. But the Bombay High Court acquitted him in 2010, according to ASP Sunita Thakare.
In the 2002 case, Salve was convicted and given a 10-year jail term. He was released from the Nashik central jail in May 2012. Salve also faces two other charges of kidnapping minors.
While he was earlier reported to be out on parole, Thakare said that "he was out after having served his jail term". State Additional Director General (Prisons) Meeran Borwankar also denied that Salve was out on parole.
