Overseas voters can have their names in electoral rolls

West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer's office on Friday issued a notification under Rule 8A of the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960, enabling overseas electors to register their names in the electoral rolls.

"Under Section-20A of the Representation of the People Act, 1950, inserted vide Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 2010, which has come into effect from February 10 this year, every Indian citizen who is absenting from his place of ordinary residence and has not acquired citizenship of any other country and who is not included in the electoral roll, is entitled to register his or her name in the electoral roll of the constituency in which his or her place of residence in the country as mentioned in the passport is located," said West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sunil Gupta.

He further said the addresses of the registration officers of each of the 294 Assembly constituencies of the state can be seen on the website www.ceowestbengal.nic.in.

According to the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act, 2010, passed in November 2010, any Indian citizen settled abroad would be able to cast his vote in the country, provided he is physically present during the time of the elections and he has a permanent address in the country. Form 6A will be introduced for this purpose.
